By far the oldest and best-known method of improving link popularity is to
seek referrals on another website. Email or contact the Webmaster of a
complementary, noncompetitive site, and ask them to link to your site.
Outline the benefits of doing so. Offer to link back to them in exchange for
the courtesy.

Before making your offer, ensure you have developed genuine content on your
own website that is of interest to the trading partner. Explain the
advantages to both them and their visitors by providing a link to this
content. Tell them where the link is situated, or set up the link in advance
with the condition that you will be glad to leave it there if they will add
a link to you in return. Take the time to examine their site so you can
politely suggest where a link to you might be appropriate. Always
personalize your e-mails! Think of how much spam you receive each day. You
need to distinguish yourself for a mass mailing. If the link is extremely
important to you, show your commitment by going out of your way. If
possible, call them personally, write a letter, or send a fax.

The simplest way to find potentially good links is through the search
engines. Search for your target keywords and study the pages that appear in
the top results. These are the sites you want to be linked on.

Be clear and concise with your request for reciprocal linking. After you
thoroughly research a potential site to ensure they are appropriate and do
have links that interest you, consider your message. What type of email
would you most likely respond to respond in a reverse situation?

Here is an example of a well crafted link exchange request email.

Hi [name], my name is [your name].
Regarding your free script and webmaster resource site at
http://www.supergoodfreescripts4u.com/

I run a web hosting business called Marble Host at www.marblehost.com

I think both our audiences are very similar and each would benefit from the
other’s site. It is with this in mind that I have added a link to your site
from www.marblehost.com/useful-sites.php

I think your site will definitely help out my customers.

I am including some details about my own site. Please feel free to feature
or link to me in any way you feel appropriate. I’d definitely appreciate it.

Maybe your featured web hosting section
http://www.superfreescripts4u.com/reccomendedhosts.html would be a good fit?

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at info@yourdomain.com or
1-800-574-0902

I'm a real person by the way, not a link request bot. =)

Best wishes,

MarbleHost.com
http://www.marblehost.com

Marble Host is a service that aims at providing a large number of
professional services in the following fields of activity: web hosting,
domain registration and quality customer support.

It may sound unbelievable, but the majority of big companies in the web
hosting business don't usually invest much in the development of new
technologies. Instead, they rely on third party solutions and software.
Unlike theirs, our hosting software was created, developed and designed
in-house. Moreover, our business approach is human-oriented in that our
client support is a center factor in the quality hosting service we offer.

We try to differentiate ourselves from traditional web hosting services by
providing a more hands-on, customized, and personal approach.

End letter

Most webmasters are friendly people who want to grow their own sites as much
as you want to grow yours. Be polite and honest. You’ll have more traffic
than you can handle in no time!
